Arusha National Park is 552 km2 in size and is situated in northern Tanzania, just north east of Arusha town. The Park is almost covers Mount Meru, a prominent volcano with an elevation of 4566 Meters above sea level.  As compared to other parks found in the northern circuit, the park is small but hosting varieties of spectacular landscapes in three distinct areas. In the west, there is a Meru Crater which funnels the Jekukumia River and the peak of Mount Meru lies on its rim, at the south-east there is Ngurdoto Crater surrounded by forest whilst the crater floor is a swamp, at the north-east there is Momella Lakes which have varying algal colors and are known for their wading birds. Arusha National Park offers fine-looking landscapes and miscellaneous animal, bird and plant life. This magnificent park is characterized by waterfalls and lakes, steep cliffs and gorges, swamps and waterholes, providing the ideal sanctuary for animals and plants.

Arusha National Park’s highlights can be seen in a single day, and the park is the only park in Tanzania’s northern circuit in which a walking safari is possible. Due to the varied landscapes that exist within the park, there is an unusually high level of diversity when it comes to wildlife. The beautification of the Park has often been called a “Little Germ” because of its wonderful structures which joined mountains, valleys, lakes and small plains clothed in green. Arusha National Park has a wonderful feeling of peace and solitude.  Arusha National park is dominated by mount Meru which is the 5th highest free standing mountain in Africa.

The Best time of your safaris at Arusha National Park

The park can be visited throughout the year; however the best time for wonderful visitation is between June and September and from December to early March. This season is a nice time for your safari as it will be out of the rainy seasons which starts from October to November (short rainy) and from March to May (Heavy rainy).

 Arusha National Parks can be reached by road with a distance of about ½ an hour by tarmac road from Arusha town, the safari center of Northern Tanzania. From Arusha town to Ngongongare gate, it is about 32 km. Moreover, Arusha National Park can be reached by air which is about 40 Kms from Kilimanjaro International Airport

The uniqueness of Arusha National Park

The Park is gifted with a variety of attractions ranging from wildlife inhabiting the wilderness to craters and mountain peaks. Having knowing lines of attractions, Arusha National Park is park of multi tourists activities include Game Drives (GD), Short Walking Safaris (SWS), Long Walking Safaris (LWS), Canoeing, Mountain Climbing, hiking and trekking (MCHT), Bird Watching (BW), Horse Riding (HR) and Cycling.

Arusha National Park is a home of groups of forest elephants, buffalo, water and bushbucks, duikers and dik diks. Spotted hyenas, leopards and civets are some of the predator inhabitants. A major attraction is the large number of primates; especially the black and white Colobus and the shining Sykes monkeys, which are very likely to be seen on a game drive or a walk in the park. There are no lions in this park, and leopards are present, but not often spotted. These are elusive cats and do not often come out to hunt until dark. Arusha National Park offers more of a peaceful environment with less of the thrill of big game viewing

Accommodation in Arusha National Park is offered in one seasonal camp within the Mount Meru forest and other special campsites that can be booked for travelers. There are huts for climbers of Mount Meru to use and Hotels and lodges for visitors are sited outside the Park and of course many are in Arusha city.

Activities in the park

Mountain hiking

In Arusha National Park, you will experience a 2 night 3 day adventure using the mountain huts Miriakamba and Saddle huts. It has to be prearranged at the Momella Gate requiring porters and an armed Ranger escort. The hike traverses several vegetation zones including beautiful Montana forests. Expect to see wildlife ecosystems including buffalo, giraffe, monkeys, baboons, antelope and lots of birds.

 Walking Safari

Arusha National Park is a great place for walking and a place where one can enjoy natural forests and wonderful plateaus in comfort because of the cool climate. Hiking has to be arranged at one of the 2 Gates (Ngongongare and or Momella gates). A fee is payable and any walk has to be accompanied by an armed Ranger.


At Arusha National Park, canoeing is possible by prior arrangement on Small Momella Lake, with buffalo, giraffe, bushbuck, water buck and hippo often seen. Wading and water birds are of course common.

 Horseback riding

Horseback trails have been established and can be combined with overnight stays in camps within the Park (but not the horses) by prior arrangement.

Game drive

Game drives are possible on a well maintained network of roads and tracks. It is an experience that tourists can get in a day game drive from Arusha Town.

 Bird watching

The Park has more than 450 bird species including both resident and migratory birds. At Small Momella and Longil lakes, both water and non-water birds can be easily sighted.
